Welcome to the Getting Started Page for the
Homeofmusic Direct Connect Hub.
For those of you who don't know, Direct Connect (also known as DC)
is a chat and Peer to Peer (also known as P2P) file sharing application.
Similar to Napster or KaZaa or one of the many other file sharing programs out there.
Through this application, you will be able to chat with other members of
Homeofmusic (also known as HOM), and also send and receive files
to and from other members of the HOM community. This page is here to help
get you started and running. If you have any problems, please read this
page completely, then try the new Direct Connect Forum on the
Homeofmusic
Community Message Board.

ACTIVATION
|
How to get access to the hub.
The is no longer a manual activation process for getting access to the hub. This step if pretty much automatic through the Homeofmusic Forums.
Once you've been registered for 2 days and have at least one post (as described in the Qualification area above), your official usergroup in the forum will go from Registered to New Member. Once you've become a New Member, you will then have access to a hidden forum, which will contain the internet address for the HOM DC Hub !!! :)
The hub address will deliberately change on occations, so if ever you cannot get into the hub, you should check the forum for the new address !!! :)
You can view your official usergroup by pressing the User CP link on any Homeofmusic Forum page. It is also directly under your username (forum nickname) on the left side of all your posts in the HOM Forums.
Obviously you will also see the hidden forum if you are a Junior Member, Member, Senior Member or Ambassador.

INSTALLATION
|
How to install the Direct Connect application
Note: After writting this, there are probably newer versions of DC++ availlable
(probably a little different), keep that in mind when following the instructions
below, you can get additional DC++ help in the
DC++ FAQ Pages.
You will need a Direct Connect program to connect to the Hub (a program application
that connects to a server is called a client). One of best clients availlable is
called DC++ (as in dee cee plus plus). The lastest version is availlable at
dcplusplus.sourceforge.net.
The file you've downloaded should be called DCPlusPlus-0.231.exe (later versions will have a different ending number). As with every program you download from the internet, you should scan it for viruses (I didn't find
any , but you should ALWAYS check yourself).
Anyhow, once you've downloaded and checked the file, all you need to do is run it by
double clicking it. It is already an exe file, so you don't need to unzip it or
anything else.
When you run the file, the DC++ Installer will take you through the very short
install process. You will be presented with three check boxes of components you can
install. I suggest you check all three:
- DC++ - CHECK
- Debug Info - CHECK (optional)
- Start Menu Shortcuts - CHECK (makes it easier to find)
Once you have selected those choices, click on NEXT>. The next page
will let you choose where you want to install DC++. You can choose any directory
on your PC for this, but the recommended directory of C:\Program Files\DC++
is probably the best if you're unsure (it really makes no difference as long as you
remember where it is). After you type in the install directory, simply click
Install. It should only take a couple of seconds. When it is completed,
simply press Close.
Since you will hopefully be using this program a lot, you might as well create a
desktop shortcut right away. Simply go to your desktop, right click any
empty area with your mouse and select New and then Shortcut. You
will then get a pop-up box asking you to Type the location of the item:.
You should type in the same directory that you just installed DC++ into, and add
\DCPlusPlus-0.231.exe at the end of that directory. So if you chose
C:\Program Files\DC++\ as your install directory, you should enter the
following as the location:
- C:\Program Files\DC++\DCPlusPlus-0.231.exe
There you go. Now that you created a desktop shortcut for this program, all you
need to do, is double click on it each time you want to run it. So go ahead and
double click your new shortcut now. The program should start almost instantly,
and you'll then see a very standard windows program box complete with menu choices
at the top.
CONGRATULATIONS ... You've successfully installed DC++ ... easy eh ??? :)

SET-UP
|
How to set-up and configure your Direct Connect Application to use the HOM DC Hub
- GENERAL
So now that you've successfully installed DC++, all that's left to do is enter a few
settings, and then you'll be ready to log into the HOM DC Hub. Start by choosing the
File drop down menu. Then, near the bottom of that drop down menu, select a
selection called Settings. It will automatically open to the General
page of the settings. You'll then see several things you can enter. Some are
optional, some are very necessary. Enter the following:
- Nick - Enter your HOM DC Hub nickname (use your HOM Forums nickname)
- E-Mail - Enter your e-mail (optional)
- Description - Enter "Homeofmusic.com member"
- Connection - Select the most accurate description of your internet connection
- Connection Settings - Here you should select Active. (Don't enter an IP or Port for now)
Note: If you have a space in your Homeofmusic Forums nickname, replace the space with an under_score.
Here's a screen shot to help you as well.
- DOWNLOADS
Next, click on the Downloads tab at the left (or top) of the settings box (between General and Sharing).
Here you should enter the directory you want all the files you get from others to end up when
they are finished downloading. So I recommend that for Default Download Directory you
select c:\shares\downloaded\, but if you have another disk partition with more space,
you might want to use that partition. Like d:\shares\downloaded\ or
e:\shares\downloaded\. Also note that if the directory you choose does not exist yet,
it will be created by DC++ when it is first needed.
Next, it is very important that for your Unfinished Files Temporary Directory, you
choose another directory outside the directory tree of Default Download Directory. Otherwise,
people could end up getting incomplete files from you, which isn't cool. So select something
like c:\incomplete. Once you've entered those two directory settings, the page should
look something like this depending on what you actually entered.
Note, the two other numeric settings should be kept at zero, and you'll get slightly faster
performance if you leave the last two blank, but it's not that important.
If you're on dial-up, you should set your download slots to 2.
- SHARING
The last page you'll need to enter settings into, is the Sharing. On this page you'll
see a big white box ... just below it, press the Add Folder button. You'll then get a
Windows Explorer type directory tree. Find and select the parent directory of the directory you chose for your
Default Download Directory (in the example I gave for the downloads settings, the parent directory would be c:\shares\. If you don't see the directory (most likely because you
chose a directory that didn't exist yet and DC++ hasn't created that directory yet), then you
can create the directory now. Otherwise if you don't know how to create a directory, you can
return to this step after your first download has finished downloading (at which point the
directory will be created automatically by DC++). The Sharing box should now look like this:
Note, that you should have Upload Slots set to at least 3 (max 2 for dial-up users).
If you have a high speed connection, then you should set it a little higher if you want. I
run mine at 10 most of the time. If you connect to multiple hubs, you'll need at least 2 slots per hub.
There are other settings availlable, but I highly recommend you do not touch them until after
you've gotten DC++ working smoothly. So now close the settings box by pressing OK.
- SET-UP TO ACCESS ACTUAL HOMEOFMUSIC HUB
Now you need to set DC++ up so that it connects to the Homeofmusic Hub. This step is rather easy.
Again, select View (might be File on some versions of DC++) on the top menu, then
choose Favorite Hubs. You'll get a new
mostly empty box that opens up. At the bottom, press the New... button. A very
small box will then appear. Enter the following information:
HUB:
- Name - Homeofmusic Hub
- Address - [READ THE ACTIVATION SECTION ON HOW TO GET THE ADDRESS OF THE HOM HUB]
- Description - Homeofmusic.com Direct Connect Hub
Identification:
- Nick - [enter your HOM Direct Connect nickname here]
- Password - [leave blank or enter your HOM Direct Connect password here if you have one]
- Description - Homeofmusic.com member
Remember to use your Direct Connect nickname and password, which could be different
from your HOM forum nickname and password.
Passwords are only for VIP access, don't worry about it for now if you're a new user.
Next select OK to close the box, and then put a checkmark in the box on the left of where
it now says Homeofmusic Hub.
Then close down DC++ completely by clicking the X at the top right corner of the
DC++ window. Wait a couple of seconds and restart DC++ again. It should start up and
automatically connect to the HOM Hub. Remember that I also need to activate your account
on the Hub side of things, so you might have to wait around 24 hours before you'll actually
get into the hub ... otherwise you'll probably get some sort of time-out or other minor
error.
CONGRATULATIONS ... You've successfully set-up and configured DC++ !!! :)
Note: On the General settings page, do NOT enter anything (like 123.123.123.123) as your IP, you should try leaving it blank, otherwise if searching and downloading doesn't work, then enter your current IP address for the internet which can be found at www.whatismyip.com
If you ever have problems connecting or anything else (after finishing with the rest of the settings),
first try entering 1412 as the Port. Then you should try entering your
current IP address (you can find your IP address easily at
www.whatismyip.com),
and all your problems should go away.
Remember that your IP address often
changes over time depending on your ISP, often everytime you log-on to the
internet, which is why you should leave it blank if it works blank.
NOTE: If you are running behind a firewall and/or router, you might need to open certain
ports to allow communication between your PC and the Hub before you can connect with all
features (or even any at all). The ports in question are 410 to 413 and
1410 to 1413. At this point, if you're still having problems, you also might want
to return to the general settings and enter port 1412. Finally, you also should try adding
your current IP.
ZoneAlarm and the Windows XP built-in firewall don't work with DC++. ZoneAlarm must be
completely uninstalled (not just disabled). You can simply disable the Windows XP
firewall. I would suggest installing another firewall. Norton's firewall seems to work,
and 'Tiny' firewall is recommended by DC++, although I've never used it before.
If your behind a router or firewall you'll find

USING DC
|
How to use the DC application for chatting and finding files.
Once you're connected to the hub, the easier thing to do is chat with others. DC++
should automatically open with the "Homeofmusic.com ClubMusic" window on top. If it's
not on top, then look at the very bottom of the DC++ program window. You should see a
tab that says Homeofmusic.com or something close to that. Simply click on it,
and you'll see the HOM DC Hub chat and connected user list.
Start by reading all the information in the chat area (the big left handed part of the
window), as the Hub puts an introduction message there when you log in. There could
be important information there, so you should always read it just in case problems are
expected or the rules have changed or the Hub location is about to be moved. You might
need to scroll up depending on the size of your window and how much was written.
Next, look to the right hand part of the window. You'll see the list of people
currently in the hub. We'll get back to this later. Underneath both the chat and
user list part of this window, you'll see a long thin text box. Put your mouse over
the box and Left Click. Then type Hello and hit Enter. Within
a couple of seconds, you should see your user name with the word Hello next to
it in the chat area. Congratulations, you just said hello to everybody else in the
DC Hub main chat area !!! :)
Next, right click on someone's name in the Hub user list. Note that names that
start with an underscore (like _ ) are not members, they are security features of the hub.
Anyhow, click on a member name and select Get File List. After a few seconds,
DC++ should have downloaded that other person's list of shared files, at that point,
a new window will pop-up. It is a Windows Explorer type of directory listing, in which
you can expand the various directories and sub-directories different people have.
Keep looking around different directories until you find a tune that you want, and then
simply double click on the file. At the bottom of the DC++ program window you should see
the download starting. you will be able to see the download progress, and see how much
time is left. Once this file has finished downloading, don't forget to return to the
Sharing part of settings to set up your Shared directory (if you skipped it before).
If you want to download a complete directory, then highlight the directory, right click
the directory, and select download. If you're going to download more than a directory or
more than about 20 files from the same person, then it is common courtesy to send them a
private message letting them know you will be using their connection for a little while.
Go back to the Homeofmusic.com Hub window, and right click on the same person's
name again. This time select Send Private Message. Type hello, and a message
thanking them for using their connection. They might or might not reply right away
(some people leave their connection on 24 hours a day even when they are not around),
but they will see the message when they get back.

HOM FILES
|
How HOM files and directories are organized.
First, you should note that by HOM File, I'm refering to all the files formerly
on Homeofmusic, and all the new files that I have added to the official HOM directories
refered to below.
IT IS VERY IMPORTANT THAT YOU DO NOT RENAME THE HOM FILES OR ALTER THE INTERNAL TAGS
IN ANY WAY. IF EVERYONE HAS THE EXACT SAME UNALTERED FILE BIT FOR BIT, THE HOMEOFMUSIC
DC HUB WILL BE THE BEST IN TERMS OF FINDING TUNES FROM ALTERNATE SOURCES AND FOR RESUMING !!!
If you used to visit Homeofmusic in the past, you will recognise the
structure of the file names right away:
(artist name) song name (mix name year)[www homeofmusic com].mp3
(solar stone) seven cities (armin van buuren vocal mix 2002)[www homeofmusic com].mp3
(antoine clamaran) alert (supala ep filtered rip 2002)[www homeofmusic com].mp3
You might have noticed, firstly, the names are all lower case, I find this makes things
easier to read in list, but more importantly, different download mechanisms and different
servers are all different when it comes to case sensitivity, so it's best to keep all
lower case so it remains consistant wherever the files may end up.
Artist name and song name are fairly obvious, but mix name is sometimes not the actual
official mix name. If I receive a file with no mix name, I might add some sort of
descriptive comment there. Like above, (supala ep filtered rip 2002), mean that the
track was on the supala ep, and that the rip was more filtered than other rips I found.
The 2002 is the year the song was released, please note that these are not 100% acurate,
as songs sometimes get released at different times in different countries, and even
sometimes get rereleased a couple of years later. For the most part though, I try to
have the most acurate information as posible in there.
If you have tunes you want to share through HOM, then contact me, and I'll put them in
with the other official directories. Which of course, leads me to the directory
structure most people keep their HOM files in. The main reason people have it this
way, is because that's the way I've had mine from the start, and the first people on
here got most of their stuff from me. I also recommend you sort your HOM files the
same way to make it easier for others to find stuff (also check the VIP section for
another good reason).
Below you'll see a list of all the different directories so far. More are being added
all the time. The main thing you should know, is that the 2000 hom and
2001 hom directories are filled with sub-directories of files that were on the
HOM music pages back in 2000 and 2001. The homn2000, homn2001,
homn2002 and homnsyn directories are filled with sub-directories of
files that never made it to the HOM music pages, mostly because they've come out
after those pages were closed down. Anyhow, the official HOM directory structure
is as follows:
- 2000 hom [29 Sub-Directories - 919 Mixes - 6.32 GB]
- nm2000-01 - [30 Mixes - 193 MB]

main hub running smoothly. Please do not ask to have VIP status. If you qualify,
you will be approached when things are set up. This might change, so please feel
free to check back here for developments.
A tip for those of you who would like to eventually get VIP status. You might as
well start now, by getting and sharing as many HOM file directories as you can.
If you have any questions on this matter, please feel free to contact an op or
myself at any time (after you've entered the hub ... so please don't ask about VIP
stuff before you've even joined the hub), and we'll get you on the right path.

DEFINITIONS
|
Definitions of certain terms, expressions and acronyms
|
Term |
Definition |
|
HOM |
Short for HomeOfMusic |
|
DC |
Short for Direct Connect |
|
Ban |
If you get banned from the Hub, then you will no longer be able to access it until
we unban you. Chances are though, that if you got banned for a good reason, the ban
will be permanent, so make sure you follow the rules. |
|
Board |
Short for Message Board. A message board is a grouping of forums. Like the
Homeofmusic Community Message Board.
The term forum is also sometimes used for a grouping of forums, which can be
a little confusing to new members ... lol. |
|
Boot |
If you break the rules, you might find yourself booted. Which is like being banned,
but less permanent. |
|
Bot |
Short for Automated Robot. The HOM DC Hom has several security bots installed to do
everything from stop spam, check everyones files and settings and checks for swearing
and vulgarity. In some circumstances, the bot can even remove you from the hub or
even ban you permanently if you break the rules. |
|
Case Sensitive |
If something is case sensitive, then it matters if you type it in upper or lower case.
For example, if your password for a site is Hello, and the password is case sensitive,
then only Hello will work. hello, HELLO, HeLLO and hEllo
all will not work, because the upper or lower case must match for each letter. If
something is not case sensitive, then Hello, hello, HELLO,
HeLLO and hEllo are all the same thing, and you can use any of them
without getting an error.
|
|
Client |
A client is normally one half of a client/server relationship. In this case, the
HOM DC Hub software on the HOM server is the server, and your DC++ application is
the client. The server normally serves information to the client, or in this case,
the HOM DC Hub sends you information about who is on-line and what files are
available and lets you chat with others. |
|
File List |
On Direct Connect, you can see other peoples shared files lists. Which is a file
that contains a list of all the files and directories in their shared directories.
You can view someone's file list by right clicking on their name in your DC++
window, and selecting Get File List. It sometimes takes a few seconds to
download. If you are currently downloading from that person, you will not get that
person's file list until the current file has finished downloading. |
|
Forum |
A forum is a grouping of discussion topics all based on the same general topic. For
example, in the Homeofmusic Community Message Board,
there is a forum called Name That Tune, which is a grouping of discussions of people trying to
find the name of an unknown tune. The term forum is also sometimes used to mean a group
of forums, which some new members might find a little confusing. |
|
GB (Gig) |
Short for Giga Byte, which is 1000 MB (one thousand mega bytes).
1 GB is about the equivalent of 100 to 150 extented mix mp3s.
1 GB = 1 Gig = 1,000,000,000 (a billion bytes).
|
|
HOM Directory |
A HOM directory, is a directory of files shared from HOM. Most HOM
directories have 21 HOM files, but not always as some have as
few as 7 and some have as many as 30. A list of all HOM directories can be found
above. If you have any other files you want to share, you
should keep them in seperate directories. Please remember though, that for the
first few days, you are only allowed to download or share HOM tunes.
|
|
HOM Files |
HOM files are files given to HOM for regular members like you, then turned around to
be shared with others. Before resharing is done though, the information about the
files are checked to make sure the artist name, song name, remix name and year are
correct. Once checked, the files are renamed in a standard format. The standard
format is as follows:
(artist name) song name (mix name year)[www homeofmusic com].mp3
(solar stone) seven cities (vocal mix 2002)[www homeofmusic com].mp3
(antoine clamaran) alert (supala ep 2002)[www homeofmusic com].mp3
More information on HOM files can be found here.
|
|
HOM Tune |
A HOM tune is a HOM file which is a song. In the past, HOM tunes refered to
all tunes (songs or remixes) that were on the Homeofmusic New Club Music pages.
But now there are more (many newer) HOM tunes availlable through the HOM DC Hub.
|
|
Hub |
A Hub is the software that runs on the server which controls everyone's access to the
HOM shared files and other files. It lets you see who else is there and lets everyone
download from each other. Without the hub, nobody would be able to connect to anybody
else using Direct Connect. |
|
MB (Meg) |
Short for Mega Byte, which is 1000 KB (one thousand kilo bytes).
One extented mix mp3 is normally between 7 and 12 MB.
1 MB = 1 Meg = 1,000,000,000 (a billion bytes). |
|
Mod |
Short for Moderator. A moderator is like an OP for a forum(s). He/She is
in charge of making sure people follow the rules and removes posts that are
inappropriate. More importantly though, a moderator is there to help you
if you have any problems. Here at HOM, we also have Ambassadors as well,
who are also there to help you with any questions or concerns you might
have. |
|
OP |
Short for Operator. Which is the same thing as a moderator in a forum. If an Operator
asks you to do something (or not to do something), you should listen to them or else
you'll be removed from the Hub. |
|
PM |
Short for Private Message. |
|
Shared Directories |
Your shared directories, are the directories that you make availlable to share with
other members. You can find them (and add or remove) by selecting the Files
menu in your DC++ window, then select Settings. Once in Settings
click on the Sharing tab at the top. You will then see a big white box,
with all the directories you share with others. |
|
Shared Files |
These are all the files in your shared directory. |
|
Slot |
A slot is what you connect to on another person's PC when you exchange files or
file lists. If you have 9 slots, then 9 people can connect to you. If you
have 9 slots, but are already connected to 6 people, then you have 3
open slots, and the other 6 are closed slots. |
|
Substantial Post |
A substantial post, is any post on the
Homeofmusic Community Message Board
that is more than just a reply of a couple of words. A substantial should also
be on-topic. It can be a short reply if you are helping someone else find a song
or information. Posts asking for tunes or for help do not count. Posts in the
Party Central forum do not count. Nor do any other
post that has no meaningful content or is for fun. Those posts are totally
permitted as long as they follow the rules, but they do not count towards your
substantial posts. Posts in the General and other non-music sections DO count,
so long as your replies are not just a sentence or two. Also, your activation
request does not count, you should have 10 substantial posts BEFORE requesting
activation.
The reason for having at least 10 substantial posts, is so that we can get an
idea of who you are. Also, you must have posted on at least 2 different days
before the day you request activation.
Substantial post has also been refered to as significant post in some places.
The two terms have the same meaning and are the same thing.
|
|
VIP |
Short for Very Important Person. A VIP usually gets elevated access or service.
Normally because of something they have done to help others or the community as
a whole. |
